AI in College Admissions
As we embark on a new college admissions cycle this summer, a timely question is if we should tolerate and or encourage our students to use ChatGPT in their application essay writing.
With extensive LLMs increasingly accessible by the day, it is becoming quite difficult to discern whether or not a personal statement or a supplemental essay is written by AI.
Therefore I believe colleges should also start training models to look for specific markers (indicators) of reflection/ depth/ growth implied in personal statements, in interviews of their applicants and start necessitating virtual recorded interviews as part of the application process.
I believe this would work better than the best detection GPTs out there (which can be beat by the way) because, while students can automate writing organization and presentation, they would not be able to AI their way out of deep reflection and the gruelling yet fulfilling process of connecting the dots of their life experiences.
